The Stables

What's on around you

Welcome to The Stables. You're staying in one of the loveliest corners of the Welsh Marches, where the River Monnow slides under an old stone bridge and the ruins of a thirteenth-century castle rise straight out of the water meadows. Skenfrith Castle, one of the famous 'Three Castles' built to guard the border with England, is close enough to wander to before breakfast, and the Bell at Skenfrith, a beautifully restored seventeenth-century coaching inn on the riverbank, does the kind of Michelin-recognised cooking that draws people from Bristol and beyond. In the evenings the valley goes properly quiet: cows in the fields, buzzards over the hills, the sound of the river rather than traffic. This is a place to slow right down, walk the Monnow's banks, and let the castle and the pub be the whole plan for the day. You've picked a spot with real history and real peace in equal measure, and both are yours for as long as you're here.

NovemberClocks went back on 25 October, so it is dark by about 4.30pm in early November and nearer 4pm by December. Autumn half-term finishes on 1 November. Expect mud on the Monnow Valley paths, and bring a torch if you're driving back from an evening show on the lanes.
